# Late payment fees

> Add a late fee disclosure to your invoices. Informational only — Clarely doesn't calculate or charge it for you.

Late payment fees in Clarely are a disclosure on your invoice, not something Clarely calculates or charges for you. Worth being clear about that up front: turning this on doesn't add a dollar amount to any invoice automatically.

<Note>
  Late fees are informational only. Clarely never adds a late fee to an invoice's total, balance due, or any line item. The fee shows as text on the invoice; collecting it, if you choose to, is on you.
</Note>

## Setting it up

Go to **Settings → Invoicing** and turn on **Late payment fee**. Choose:

* **Percentage** — a percent of the invoice total, shown as a monthly rate (0–100%)
* **Fixed amount** — a flat dollar amount, up to \$999.99

## What your client sees

Once enabled, every invoice — both the copy your client opens and the PDF — shows a line like one of these, depending on which type you chose:

* *"A late payment fee of 1.5% per month applies to invoices outstanding after the due date."*
* *"A late payment fee of \$25 applies to invoices outstanding after the due date."*

This appears automatically on every invoice once the setting is on — there's nothing to add per-invoice.

## If a client actually pays late

Clarely doesn't track days-late or calculate what's owed under this policy, and it won't add the fee to the invoice for you. If you want to collect it, you'll need to record it yourself — either as an adjustment on the existing invoice or as a separate manual invoice.

## How this relates to invoice reminders

Late fees and [invoice reminders](/invoices/invoice-reminders) are completely independent settings. Turning one on doesn't affect the other, and reminder emails never mention the late fee — the fee only ever appears as the static disclosure on the invoice itself.

## What to do next

Turn on **Late payment fee** in Settings → Invoicing if you want the disclosure to appear on your invoices, or see [Invoice reminders](/invoices/invoice-reminders) to have Clarely nudge clients before it comes to that.
