# Digital signature

> How client signatures work and what they protect.

Clarely's digital signature is legally binding under the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN Act) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA). When a client signs a quote, they're agreeing to the exact terms and pricing shown at the time of signing, and Clarely captures a legally defensible evidence record of that agreement.

Digital signature is available on all Clarely plans, including Free.

## How it works

Your client receives a link to their quote. They review the line items, total, and contract terms. At the bottom of the page, they complete the signing zone:

1. Read the **electronic consent disclosure** — a paragraph confirming they agree to conduct the transaction electronically and that their typed name carries the same legal weight as a handwritten signature.
2. Check the **"I agree" checkbox**.
3. Type their **full name** in the signature field.
4. Tap **Accept Quote**.

Both the checkbox and the name field must be completed before the button activates. Typing a full name is currently the only way to sign — there's no drawn or stylus signature option. A typed name carries the same legal weight under E-SIGN and UETA, so nothing is lost by keeping it this simple.

## What gets captured at signing

At the moment of signing, Clarely captures and permanently stores a full evidence record:

| Evidence field | What it captures |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Signed name | The exact name the client typed |
| Timestamp | Date and time of signing |
| IP address | The client's IP address at the moment of signing |
| Device identifier | Browser and device information (user agent) |
| Consent text | Verbatim copy of the electronic consent disclosure shown at signing |
| Disclosure version | Version tag of the consent language shown — currently `v1-2026-06` — confirms exactly which disclosure was presented |
| Scope snapshot | Frozen copy of the quote's written scope of work at signing |
| Document hash | SHA-256 hash of the signed document content — tamper evidence confirming nothing was changed after signing |

This evidence package is stored on the quote record permanently. It cannot be modified by anyone.

## Viewing the evidence record

As the business owner, you can access the full evidence record from the **QuoteDetail** page for any accepted quote. Open the **Acceptance evidence** section at the bottom of the page — it shows all captured fields with their exact values.

## Terms lock

At the moment of signing, Clarely also freezes a snapshot of every line item — the description, quantity, price, and total. This snapshot is stored permanently and cannot be modified by anyone. See [Locked terms](/quotes/locked-terms) for details.

## Is it legally binding?

Yes. The combination of explicit electronic consent, typed name, timestamp, IP address, verbatim consent snapshot, and document hash constitutes a legally valid agreement under E-SIGN and UETA. The evidence package has been reviewed by an attorney and confirmed to meet the standard for electronic signatures in commercial agreements.

## Client experience

Clients don't need a Clarely account to sign. The signature link works on any device — phone, tablet, or desktop. The process takes under a minute.

## Accessing signed quotes

Every signed quote is stored in Clarely permanently. You can access it any time from your Quotes list. The QuoteDetail page shows the signed version with the full evidence record.
